I've traveled to many places in the world, both as part of my work and for pleasure. I've been to many of the places that Tony has visited. I must say that Anchorage, Alaska has some of the greatest restaurants in the world. I'm not talking just about the high end places like Simon and Seafort's, but about simple, economical places like the unlikely named Alaska Salmon Chowder House (at 443 W. 4th Avenue) which is owned by a couple of Korean women and provides some of the best salmon steaks and chowders of various construction to be had in the entire country if not the world. I'm talking about a Vietnamese place with the unlikely name of Ray's place on Spenard which serves some of the best Viet food this side of the Pacific Ocean.

I'm also talking about Sushiya on E. Dimond Blvd which serves exquisitely fresh and reasonably priced seafood available no where else in this country. I'm talking about the incredible blueberry pancakes available at the Downtown Marriott Hotel.

And in a city with over 35,000 Koreans living in it, you would not be disappointed if you expected some truly great Korean food. There is a nicely decorated place on Fireweed if my memory serves me correctly and it's next door to a great Korean bakery where you can get your desert to take home. This place serves the famous Korean hot pot soup and tofu dishes so loved by Korean people everywhere and you will always find them eating there.

Then there's the Glacier Brew Pub which is open late and serves some of the best bar food to be had anywhere along with some of the best craft-brewed ales, pilsners, and lagers to be had anywhere. This place, although large, has a homey, comfortable feeling, which is especially seductive on a cold alaska winter night.

I live in South Carolina. And I'm in love with the people, terrain mystery, and food of Alaska. Tony needs to check it out.

In three paragraphs you have shown yourself to be both courageous and eloquent. Thank you for saying what I have thought so many times about the US not taking care of her own. Isn't it odd that our government turns its back on a city that is one of the cornstones of America's heritage, yet a handful of chefs, entertainers, et al, will give time, money, and energy in order to bring New Orleans back from the precipice.

I have to agree. But in my case I think we are closer in age. He feels like a male version of me - personality wise, except I don't drink.

From the gist of his narrations, I'd say it's a matter of a lot of herbs & spice & cooking it for a long time. So try getting a piece of cheap meat, mix it with garlic, chilis, rosemary, & boil it for an hour. A soul food cookbook also helps.

my wife any i love anthony we totaly love him. I love to cook and i wanna go back to school to become a chef and hopefully be able to open my own restaraunt and i would make up the whole menu of anthony's favorite dishes the menu would be a pork lovers paradice and i would call the place Bourdains in honor to him and i hope that if this dream came true i would be so lucky for him to vist my place.

I doubt Samantha could endure the endless parade of blood, brains, & bugs. Samantha prefers the quaint cafe or high-classed restaurant. Tony prefers the dirty, dark alley where a gnarled old man is grilling God-knows-what on a charcoal grill. I don't believe Sam would last long with him.
